John Curnyn is Principal at the Law Office of John Curnyn in Evanston, where he focuses his practice on criminal defense. Craig L. Engebretson serves as Bureau Chief of the Juvenile Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in Chicago. He is a member of the Cook County Child Death Review and the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Juvenile Courts. He is a recipient of the American Legion’s Award of Legal Excellence and obtained a fellowship at the University of Chicago’s Civic Leadership Academy in 2021. Mr. Engebretson received his B.A. from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Alison R. Flaum is the Legal Director of the Children and Family Justice Center, which is part of the Bluhm Legal Clinic at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and she is also a clinical professor of law. She received her A.B. from Brown University, her J.D. from Yale Law School, and her LL.M. in clinical advocacy from the Georgetown University Law Center.
Michelle Jenkins Chappell is Associate General Counsel at the Chicago Housing Authority. Prior to her current position, she worked for many years at the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. She has been recognized by Chicago’s 300 Black Women Leaders and received the Cook County Bar Association’s Young Leaders of the Year Award (2024). Ms. Jenkins Chappell received her B.A. cum laude from Spelman College and her J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law.
Patrick C. Keenan-Devlin is the Executive Director and Youth Defense Attorney of the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy, where he also represents youth in juvenile delinquency proceedings and serves as a certified trainer in juvenile defense practices. His experience in public policy in Illinois, as well as his strong ties to the community, serve him well in his role at the Moran Center. He previously worked as the Health Policy Advocate for the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law and as Legislative Director of Citizen Action/Illinois. Mr. Keenan-Devlin graduated cum laude from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music and received his J.D. from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Nrupa Patel is a Partner at BRE Law in Decatur, where she focuses her practice on family law, criminal defense, DCFS appeals, and expungements. She is a member of the Decatur and Illinois State Bar Associations and a recipient of the Decatur Bar Association’s Russell D. Hoerbert Pro Bono Award (2019). Ms. Patel received her B.A. magna cum laude from Bradley University and her J.D. cum laude from the Northern Illinois University College of Law.
Kathy Roller is an assistant public defender with the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender, where she is a trial attorney in the Juvenile Justice Division. Ms. Roller has been an assistant public defender for over 25 years and has first chaired over 400 trials. She has lectured nationally on topics including Illinois’ extended juvenile jurisdiction and transfer statutes, trial advocacy, ethics, sentencing advocacy, and contempt proceedings. Ms. Roller received her B.A. from Texas A&M University and her J.D. with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Tamar L. Sirkin is retired from the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender, where she focused her practice in juvenile justice and mitigation. She serves on the Great Lakes Regional Advisory Board for The Gault Center. Ms. Sirkin received her B.A. with distinction from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
Jami A. Vrbancic is a staff attorney with the Juvenile Justice Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago. She is a member of the Chicago and Illinois State Bar Associations and the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois.
