Introduction & Acknowledgement


This IICLE® Data Protection & Privacy Policy describes how personal data collected by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education (IICLE®) must be collected, handled, and stored to meet the data protection standards of IICLE and to comply with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations. IICLE collects personal information during the normal course of business from customers, suppliers, business contacts, employees, and others with whom the organization has relationships.

This data protection policy ensures that IICLE:

  • Complies with applicable data protection laws and regulations;
  • Establishes best practices for the handling of personal data; and
  • Maintains transparency about how it stores and processes personal data.

When you engage with the IICLE website (iicle.com) and the products and services available on the site, you agree to the collection and use of certain information, as outlined in this policy, and you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this policy, in conjunction with the IICLE website Terms and Conditions. The terms used in this Policy have the same meaning as those in the Terms and Conditions, except as otherwise noted in this policy.

Information We Collect About You


IICLE collects a variety of information that will assist us in providing you with products and services that match your preferences. We collect this information through your profile on the IICLE website, your communications with us, your transactions, and your use of our products and services. We may collect the following categories of information about you. All the information detailed below is hereinafter referred to as “Information.”

Information You Provide to Us

When engaging with IICLE, its products or services, or the IICLE website, you may provide IICLE with information, including, without limitation:

  • Individual identifiers such as name, email address(es), postal address(es), telephone number(s), and your Illinois Attorney Registration number and other information you opt to provide (such as your birthday, race, and gender)
  • Financial information, such as credit or debit card information for payment purposes. IICLE does not process those payments directly. We collect that information from you to share it with our third-party payment processors, in compliance with PCI Security Standards.
  • Social media information
  • Additional information as otherwise described to you at the point of collection or pursuant to your consent.

Financial Information

To complete a purchase of IICLE products or services, the user must provide contact information and a valid credit or debit card number, and expiration date. On the IICLE website, this transaction is conducted via the use of a Secured Socket Layer (SSL) standard transmission encryption to protect the user’s personal and financial information submitted. IICLE uses a third-party credit/debit card processing company to process the user’s credit/debit card charges for products and services. IICLE does not retain, share, store, or have access to your credit or debit card information.

Information We May Automatically Collect About You

The IICLE website, IICLE email marketing software, and other business systems used by IICLE may automatically collect certain information about you and the device you use to access the IICLE website or services. This information is used by IICLE to enhance your end-user experience; to improve the overall quality of IICLE products and services; and to provide general statistics regarding the use of IICLE products and services. This information may include:

  • IP address, which is the number associated with the service through which you access the Internet such as your ISP (Internet Service Provider);
  • Date and time of your visit or use of the IICLE website, email, or systems;
  • Domain server from which you are using or accessing the IICLE website, email, or systems;
  • Type of computer, web browser, search engine, operating system, and platform you use;
  • Your movement and activity within the IICLE website, which is aggregated with other information; and
  • Mobile device information, including the type of device you use, operating system version, and the device identifier (or “UDID”).

Cookies & Technologies Used to Collect Information About You

IICLE may collect some information by using certain technologies, such as cookies, web beacons, and other technologies. Third-party service providers may also view, edit, or set their own cookies or place web beacons.

  • Cookies (or browser cookies). A cookie is a small file placed on the hard drive of your computer. You may refuse to accept browser cookies by activating the appropriate setting on your browser. However, if you select this setting, you may be unable to access certain parts of the IICLE website and/or certain IICLE products and services. Unless you have adjusted your browser settings to refuse cookies, the IICLE system will issue cookies when you direct your browser to the IICLE website.
  • Web Beacons. IICLE website pages may contain small electronic files known as web beacons (also referred to as clear gifs, pixel tags, and single-pixel gifs) that permit IICLE to count users who have visited those pages and measure other related statistics (for example, recording the popularity of certain content and verifying system and server integrity). IICLE also uses these technical methods to analyze the traffic patterns, such as the frequency with which our end users visit various parts of the IICLE website. These technical methods may involve the transmission of Information either directly to IICLE or to a third party authorized by IICLE to collect information on behalf of IICLE. The IICLE website also uses retargeting pixels from Google, Facebook, and other ad networks. IICLE uses web beacons in its HTML emails that help IICLE determine whether the recipients have opened those emails and/or clicked on links in those emails.
  • Analytics. Analytics are tools IICLE uses, such as Google Analytics, to provide IICLE with information about traffic to the IICLE website and the use of IICLE products and services. Google may share this general information with other services and websites whose use the collective data to contextualize and personalize the ads of their own advertising networks.   • Mobile Device Applications. If you access the IICLE website, IICLE may automatically collect Information about your device, your phone number, and your physical location.

Information We May Receive from Third Parties

IICLE may collect additional Information about you from third-party websites, social media applications (including, but not limited to, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, hereinafter referred to as “Social Media Platforms”), and sources providing publicly available information (e.g., from the U.S. postal service) to help us provide services to you, to help prevent fraud, and for marketing and advertising purposes.

Information IICLE may access about you, with your consent, may include, but is not limited to, your basic social media platform information, your location data, and certain information about your activities on the social media platform. Please keep in mind that when you provide information to IICLE on a third-party website or platform, the Information you provide may be separately collected by the third-party website or the social media platform.

This policy only applies to information collected by IICLE. IICLE is not responsible for the privacy and security practices of third-party websites or social media platforms or the information they may collect (which may include IP addresses). You should contact any such third party or social media platform directly to determine their respective privacy policies. Links to any other websites or content do not constitute or imply an endorsement or recommendation by IICLE of the linked website, social media platform, or any content thereon.

How We Use Your Information


IICLE uses and processes your information for purposes that may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • To provide you with the products and services that you request;
    • To personalize the IICLE website and user experience;
    • To process transactions you make through or in connection with IICLE products and services;
    • To respond to your comments, inquiries, and questions and to provide customer service;
    • For general or targeted marketing and advertising purposes, if you have not already opted out of receiving such communications;
    • For sending you promotional material or special offers on behalf of our sponsors, if you have not already opted out of receiving such communications;
    • To manage, improve, and foster relationships with third-party service providers, including vendors, contractors, and suppliers;
    • To maintain, improve, customize, or administer IICLE business and IICLE products and services;
    • To conduct internal processes to resolve technical problems, and improve security;
    • To comply with IICLE Terms & Conditions;
    • For analytics for business purposes and business intelligence;
    • To comply with any applicable laws and regulations and to respond to lawful requests; and
    • For any other purposes disclosed to you at the time IICLE collects your information and pursuant to your consent.

IICLE may also use information that has been de-identified or aggregated for purposes not otherwise listed above.

Email Addresses and Websites

IICLE does not sell or rent your email address to anyone. IICLE reserves the right to offer you the option to opt in to provide your email address to a third-party sponsor, promotional partner, marketing partner, or advertiser.

Postal Addresses – Use of NCOA & RSR Updates

IICLE does not sell or rent your postal address to anyone. IICLE selectively makes its list of program participants, including postal addresses, available to sponsors. If you would prefer that IICLE not make your postal address available to sponsors, as described in this paragraph, please follow the Opt-Out Instructions in this Policy. IICLE also reserves the right to offer you the option to opt in to provide your postal address to a third-party promotional partner, marketing partner, or advertiser. In the regular course of business, IICLE avails itself of programs through the United States Postal Service and its licensees that provide updates to postal addresses via the National Change of Address (NCOA) and Return Service Requested (RSR) systems. IICLE uses the information provided by these programs to update your postal address information and ensure the expedient and effective delivery of IICLE products, services, and communications. Such updates will be applied by IICLE to your information in all IICLE systems unless and until you opt out of receiving postal mailings from IICLE pursuant to the opt out provisions of this Policy.

Telephone Numbers

IICLE does not sell or rent your telephone number to any third party. IICLE reserves the right to offer you the ability to opt in to provide your telephone number to a third-party sponsor, promotional partner, marketing partner, or advertisers.

Sharing or Disclosing Your Information


With Your Consent

IICLE may share Information consistent with this Policy by requesting and receiving your consent.

Third-Party Service Providers

IICLE may share your information with third-party service providers or data processors that perform certain functions or services on our behalf (such as to host IICLE products and services, provide services to IICLE, store or manage data, perform analyses, process payments, provide customer service, or send marketing communications for IICLE). These third-party service providers will process this data only for purposes specified by IICLE.

Disclosure of Information for Legal and Administrative Reasons

IICLE may disclose your Information without notice: (1) when required by law or to comply with a court order, subpoena, search warrant, or other legal process; (2) to cooperate or undertake an internal or external investigation or audit; (3) to comply with legal, regulatory, or administrative requirements of governmental authorities (including, without limitation, requests from governmental agency authorities to view your Information); (4) to protect and defend the rights, property, and safety of IICLE and any of its officers, directors, employees, attorneys, agents, contractors, partners, and users of products and services; (5) to enforce or apply our Terms & Conditions; and (6) to verify the identity of the user of our products and services.

Business Transfers

Your information may be transferred, sold, or otherwise conveyed to a third party if IICLE: (1) merges with or is acquired by another business entity; (2) sells all or substantially all of its assets: (3) is adjudicated bankrupt; or (4) is liquidated or otherwise reorganized. You agree to any and all such conveyances of your Information.

De-Identified or Aggregated Data

IICLE may share your information on an aggregated basis for any purpose in which your specific information is blinded, masked, or otherwise not identifiable.

Sponsors & Promotional Partners

IICLE may notify you about offers from promotional partners (which include IICLE sponsors, marketing partners, and advertisers) through banner ads as well as promotional emails. All targeting of these messages is done internally, and IICLE promotional partners will not have access to the targeting information. IICLE may perform research on your demographics, interests, and behavior based on the information provided to IICLE during a promotion. IICLE may share your information with our promotional partners if you affirmatively respond to a promotional offer. IICLE may share your mailing address with program sponsors in accordance with this Policy unless you have previously opted out.

You may elect to provide information via an external link to the promotional partner. IICLE is not responsible for any Information you provide using such a link to an external website that is not owned or controlled by IICLE, pursuant to the provisions regarding “Links to Other Websites, Products and Services” below.

Links to Other Websites, Products and Services


The IICLE website and IICLE products, services, promotions, and communications may contain links to other websites or products and services that are not owned or controlled by IICLE, including links to social media platforms. These links may redirect you away from the IICLE website or away from IICLE products, services, promotions, and communications to other websites for information, other products, or services, or to receive special offers, or for transactions or purchases. This policy only applies to information collected by IICLE. IICLE is not responsible for the privacy and security practices of third-party websites or social media platforms or the information they may collect (which may include IP addresses). Information Security


IICLE uses commercially reasonable measures to protect information we receive from misuse, acquisition, deletion, or unauthorized access or disclosure. IICLE has controls in place designed to secure and safeguard such information. However, you should assume that no data transmitted over the internet or stored or maintained by IICLE or its third-party service providers can be 100% secure. Therefore, although IICLE believes the measures it has put in place reduce the likelihood of security issues to a level appropriate to the type of data involved, IICLE does not promise or guarantee, and you should not expect, that your information or private communications will always remain private and secure. IICLE does not guarantee that third parties will not misuse your information. IICLE is not responsible for the circumvention of any privacy settings or security features. You agree that IICLE will not have liability for misuse, access, acquisition, deletion, or disclosure of your information. If you believe that your Information has been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized person, you should promptly notify us via email to info@iicle.com so that IICLE staff can take necessary measures.

Data Retention & Destruction


IICLE will retain your Information for as long as necessary to provide you with IICLE products and services as long as necessary to comply with its legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce IICLE policies. If you wish to request that IICLE no longer use your information to provide products and services to you, please contact IICLE staff at 217-787-2080 or info@iicle.com. In accordance with routine record keeping, IICLE staff may delete certain records that contain information you have submitted to IICLE. IICLE is under no obligation to store such information indefinitely and disclaims any liability arising out of, or related to, the destruction of such information.

Your Choices


Marketing Communications

By using the IICLE website and/or IICLE products and services, you agree that IICLE may contact you by email, as set forth herein. If you do not wish to receive promotional emails from IICLE, you may click on the “unsubscribe” link in the email to unsubscribe and opt out of marketing email communications. To be removed from postal mail marketing, please contact us at 217-787-2080 or info@iicle.com.

Location Sharing

You can change the privacy settings of your device at any time to turn off the sharing of location information with IICLE. If you choose to turn off location sharing, this could affect certain features of the IICLE website, and your access to certain products or services provided by IICLE. If you have specific questions about the privacy settings of your device, please contact the manufacturer of your device or your mobile service provider for assistance.

If you want to delete any cookies that are already on your device, please refer to your file management software to locate the file or directory that stores cookies. Geographic Location of Data Storage and Processing


IICLE collects information and processes and stores that information in databases located in the United States. Therefore, IICLE may store and process information on servers located outside of the country where you originally deposited the data. If you are using IICLE products and services from a location outside of the United States, you should be aware that you may transfer personally identifiable information about yourself to the United States and that the data protection laws of the United States may or may not be as comprehensive as those in your own country. By visiting the IICLE website and submitting any information thereon, you consent to the transfer of such Information to the United States.

Children’s Information


The IICLE website and IICLE products and services are intended for users over the age of 16. If IICLE becomes aware that a user is under 16 and has provided IICLE with personally identifying information, IICLE will take steps to promptly comply with any applicable legal requirements to remove that user’s information. If you believe that IICLE has mistakenly or unintentionally collected information from a child under the age of 16, please contact us immediately at 217-787-2080.

“Do Not Track” Signals


IICLE does not support “Do Not Track,” which is a preference you can set in your web browser to inform websites that you do not want to be tracked. You can enable or disable this setting by visiting the preferences settings page of your web browser.

Although most changes are likely to be minor, IICLE reserves the right, at any time and without notice, to add to, change, update, or modify this privacy policy, simply by posting such change, update, or modification on the IICLE website. All such changes, updates and modifications will be effective immediately upon posting. It is your obligation to check our current policy for any changes.
