In this month’s FLASHPOINTS Author Spotlight, the Institute celebrates the contributions of Janet Rae Montgomery. Montgomery has been an IICLE® volunteer author since the 1992 edition of TRUST ADMINISTRATION, having most recently contributed to the 2022 edition of ASSET PROTECTION PLANNING. Additionally, she once served as the regular author of the Estate Planning & Probate Law FLASHPOINTS column.

Montgomery “continue[s] to learn from IICLE® handbooks and seminars,” noting that “IICLE® is the first place I turn when I have a question or need quickly to get up to speed.” She has been writing the chapter “Income Taxation of Trusts” for “more than 30 years.” Montgomery finds that the best way to learn a subject is to teach it to others and in doing so has found that it has made her a better lawyer and a better all-around professional, leading to other opportunities such as serving as an adjunct professor at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and becoming a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC).

Montgomery is Of Counsel to Nisen & Elliott, LLC, where she concentrates her practice in estate planning and administration. In addition to her membership in ACTEC, she is also a member of the DuPage Estate Planning Council, the Chicago Estate Planning Council, and the Trust Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association. Montgomery received her B.A. magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Southern California and her J.D. from Stanford Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review.
