Do I need the IICLE Ethics Bundle if I have already earned 30 MCLE credits?
Maybe. Even if you have earned 30 Illinois MCLE credits, your Illinois MCLE Board transcript must include the required Illinois professional responsibility credits to maintain compliance. The IICLE Ethics Bundle provides everything you need to complete the Professional Responsibility MCLE requirement.
Every two years, attorneys must complete 30 total MCLE hours, including at least 6 professional responsibility credit hours. This 6-hour professional responsibility requirement includes two required credit types: one credit hour of mental health/substance abuse and one credit hour of diversity/inclusion. The 6 professional responsibility credit hours count toward the total credit hours completed for a given reporting period.
If an attorney earns 30 credit hours for a reporting period without completing the required 6 credit hours of professional responsibility, the attorney still needs to fulfill the professional responsibility requirement. See S.Ct. Rule 794 or the MCLE Board FAQ for guidance.
If I earn more than one mental health/substance abuse credit or more than one diversity/inclusion credit, can I apply those credits toward the other 4 hours of general professional responsibility or my overall 30-hour Illinois MCLE requirement?
Yes. MCLE rules prescribe a minimum requirement for one hour of both diversity/inclusion and mental health/substance abuse credits, but no maximum is established. Programs qualifying for diversity/inclusion and mental health/substance abuse may count toward the remainder of the 6-hour professional responsibility MCLE requirement after the core one-hour requirement for both carve-outs have been completed, which also count toward the total 30-hour requirement.
