| Q. |
What is the difference between the Simple and Advanced search methods?
|
| A. |
The simple search is a freetext search that (as it currently exists) should be more useful to the average searcher. For example, if you type dog bite, it returns results for dog, bite and "dog bite". It allows searches such as FORMSOF(drink) to find drink, drunk, drinking. Proximity searches such as drunk~drive or drunk NEAR drive to find drunk while driving are possible, with the results ranked so that the ones that are closer together appear first in the results listing.
The advanced search is a more literal search that should be more useful to the expert searcher. This allows searches such as "drunk" OR "intoxicated", "dog" AND NOT "bite", and the regular expressions that experts use to ensure precise matches. You can do wildcard searches like grandm* to find grandma and grandmother. This search, used correctly, will generally provide fewer and more exact matches.
The advanced search method allows you to use regular expressions. This is a more complicated method of searching, but it can produce more exact results. See this page for examples of regular expressions.
